When it comes to raffles, random drawings, and lotteries, I have no luck. I think the last time I won something was at a bingo fundraiser when I was in second grade; so when I woke up to an email from Sarah Vickers saying I was chosen as a winner of a Classy Girls Wear Pearls giveaway I was in shock. She told me I had won one of their new scalloped oxford dresses and to let her know what color and size I wanted. Baffled, I went with the navy gingham because you can never have enough navy and white.
It arrived about a week later, in a navy KJP box, wrapped in paper with an old map design, and with a note from Sarah and a cute sticker inside. Opening and unwrapping the box was almost as good as reading the email saying I had won – it was like a belated birthday present to myself. When I tried on the dress I was surprised at how lightweight it was. I decided to wear it for a day out shopping with my best friend and paired it with a brown belt, Sperry’s, and pearl earrings. With the sleeves rolled up and a belt around the waist it’s great for warmer spring days. It was incredibly comfy and easy to wear but a teeny bit too big on me. For size reference, I got a small, but in hindsight an extra small might have been better.
We spent the morning walking around Bethesda. I love the train mural just off Bethesda Row and thought it’d be a perfect backdrop for some pictures. After snapping a few we couldn’t resist stopping in Sugarfina, a candy boutique right nearby. I read in the store that the founders went to see Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory on a date and were inspired by the idea for an adult candy store. The store features all sorts of candies, from alcohol flavored gummies, to chocolate covered nuts and everything in between. If you’re getting more than one box, you can build different size bento boxes filled with candy cubes.
Their champagne bears have been a long time favorite of mine but I always love stopping in to get samples of their latest creation. In the past I’ve really liked their holiday gingerbread bites, but this week they were featuring their new line of green juice bears. They contain Vitamins C & A and are made with apple, lemon, ginger and greens (just like a green juice!) so I was apprehensive to try them. They tasted surprisingly good with apple being the overwhelming flavor, and I couldn’t resist eating a few more before leaving the store.
We walked in with no expectations but ended up leaving weighed down by candy. That day they were featuring a special mystery bag deal – 14 boxes for $30 (normally one box is around $8), so of course we had to get one to split. It had a few cubes I hadn’t tried yet, like ice cream cones and Fuji Apple Caramels, as well as my absolute favorite – the peach bellini. Whether you get cubes or bento boxes, it’s a little expensive for candy, but it makes a great gift or a treat to yourself during finals week. In the past I’ve gotten a few of the little taster bags as a thank you for the teacher, and they also do special themed boxes for weddings, baby showers, graduation, and other big events that come up throughout the year.
