Chihuly at the New York Botanical Garden

Last week my grandma came to New York for a few days to visit. She raised my mom and uncle in North Jersey and worked with my grandpa on the Upper West Side so the city isn’t anything new for her. Since we weren’t going to take her to do any of the more touristy things, I wanted to take her to do some things she hadn’t seen before and make it a memorable trip for her. (We started with cronuts at Dominique Ansel and she can confirm, they are 100% worth the hype – we almost went back for more!) When I heard about Chihuly at the New York Botanical Gardens I thought it was a great idea and my mom agreed, so we got up early to get the subway to Grand Central and took Metro North up to the Botanical Garden in the Bronx. The train stop is right across the street from the gardens making it so quick and easy to get to from Midtown.

Dale Chihuly is an insanely talented artist who works with glass. My parents first saw some of his works in Seattle earlier this summer, but I had only seen pictures. I was in awe at what he was able to create. Some of his larger pieces were just on the grounds which you can see for less than $10, but a lot were inside the library and the conservatory, which requires tickets for entry. We ended up getting tickets and I’m so glad we did.

It was an incredibly hot day, but definitely worth the sweat marks to get to see the exhibits. It was also my first time at the Gardens and it was SO nice being out in nature and around trees and grass after a few consecutive weeks in the city. I’ve been loving wrap skirts lately and this one was perfect for a day of exploring! The one I’m wearing is from Brandy Melville but I linked a few wrap pieces I’m loving in this post and one is on sale right now!

The exhibit is going until October 29th so if you’re in the area I definitely recommend checking it out! My parents went to the grounds last year in early fall (September-October) and my mom said the plants were dead, so the earlier you can go the better! If you can’t make it out to the Bronx, hopefully, these pictures will help give you an idea of how insane some of the pieces were. I had to include a side-by-side of myself next to the first sculpture above to give you an idea of how massive it was. (P.S. Click to enlarge the images and get the full effect!)
