I first visited the Hirshhorn museum when I toured American University back in November 2015, and was impressed with the museum then, but the Yayoi Kusama exhibit really blew me away. By some miracle, my friend ended up with an extra ticket to Infinity Mirrors exhibit and it was by far one of the coolest museum exhibits I have ever been to. The exhibit consists mainly of small boxed rooms, each with mirrors on all four walls. Each one has a different feel and atmosphere to it. We didn’t have time to wait for each room, but we did get to see the first few and each one was cooler than the last. You only get 20-30 seconds in each room to keep lines moving but I could have spent so much more time than that in each of them.
My favorite room had light bulbs in different colors hanging from the ceilings at different heights. I thought the mirror effect worked the best in this room because it made you feel like you were surrounded by little lights for miles. My description can’t do it justice, but hopefully this picture helps with the visualization.
Some of the other coolest parts of the exhibit were the giant, pink, polka-dot balloons, and the rainbow dot stickers. The entire room is painted white and they give you a pack of 6 stickers in different colors and sizes to help decorate the room. You can leave your mark on one of the most instagrammed rooms on the Mall!
Tickets are hard to come by because they’re free, but if you can snag some it’s definitely worth the time! If you’re not in DC the exhibit is continuing in Seattle, Los Angeles, Toronto, Cleveland, and Atlanta over the course of the next two years.
