I know what you’re thinking. Your perfume has probably gone untouched since March 2020 and you’re wondering why on earth I would choose now to start talking about it. I was never an avid perfume wearer; it was just a step in the morning routine that never really crossed my mind. Over the past few months, however, I’ve found that even on days when I don’t change out of sweats or put on makeup, adding a spritz of perfume makes me feel put together and ready for the day. So the next question is, what scent am I wearing?
To be honest, it changes daily right now. My friends got me the Le Labo Discovery Set for the holidays and since then I’ve been obsessed with finding my signature scent. (P.S. it makes a GREAT gift for yourself or a friend!) Le Labo is one of the longest lingering perfumes I’ve tried which means a little goes a long way and the mini bottles last longer than you’d expect. I’ve tried all 5 of the scents in the Discovery Set (as well as a few others!) and so far Another 13 is my favorite but I like Bergamote 22 and Lys 41 as well. I gave The Noir 29 to Max.
Before discovering Le Labo, my perfume of choice was Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle. If you live in New York I highly recommend checking out the fragrance experience at the Chanel Beauty Atelier (first mentioned here), where you can do a completely unbiased, unlabeled scent test to determine your top 3 favorites. I did the experience twice and picked Coco Mademoiselle both times when I probably would’ve gone for No. 5 or Chance just based on labeling and advertising.
Interestingly enough, Coco Mademoiselle, Another 13, and Viktor & Rolf’s Flowerbomb (the other perfume I own), all have hints of jasmine. Even Lys 41, my secondary Le Labo scent of choice, has it. It’s a scent I now know to look for in any new fragrances I’m interested in. If you haven’t already, try looking up the profiles of any scents you currently wear to see if there are any similarities!
If Le Labo is out of your price range and you don’t live in New York, another fun way to find your signature scent is the Sephora Perfume favorites sampler. There’s only one currently available, Treat Yourself, but there are usually a few options so keep your eye out. These are a bigger cost upfront than the Le Labo Discovery Kit but each box includes a voucher for a free full-size perfume; a full-size perfume plus a ton of minis to work your way through makes it totally worth it. There are also two mini sets, Best of Vanilla and the Mini Perfume Travel Set, which both include vouchers for a travel-sized perfume.
