Making Trends Work for You

Lately, I’ve been thinking that if you keep something in your closet for long enough it’s bound to come back into style. In the five years I’ve owned this scarf I’ve worn it only once, but for some reason, I held onto it. Now with leopard prints everywhere, I’m so glad I did. Heidi Klum says it about fashion every week on Project Runway, but the same stands for trends: one day they’re in, the next, they’re out. Besides being hard to keep up with and going out of style quickly, trends also don’t always work for everyone.

I started this blog to share my personal style. Among other things, personal style is just that – personal. It’s your brand. Granted, your brand could be following all the latest trends as soon as they happen, but in most cases, your brand is more defined than that and reflects who you are and your personality. I’m still in the process of trying to define my own style. Some days it’s as classic prep as you can get and other days it’s an all-black outfit topped with a leather moto jacket. Although some of my recent posts have been centered around trendier pieces or styling trends, nothing I’ve worn or shared on the blog is something I wouldn’t wear in my everyday life. It’s all true to my personality and true to my personal style.

I shared this specific outfit because it hits on a few trends but is so true to what I love to wear. I’m temperature-sensitive (easily hot and easily cold) so I love simple layers like these. I love that the outfit can work three different ways and that I could wear the shirt without the scarf of the jacket because of the little ruffle detail. I’m all about color coordination and simple pieces that can be worn over and over again a million different ways. Are suede moto jackets really in right now? Yes. Is leopard really in right now? Yes. Did I abandon my personal sense of style to fit these trends? Not at all.

TLDR: Don’t buy something just because it’s popular. Pick pieces that work for you and make you feel confident. Your fashion choices can show your personality and who you are if you stay true to yourself.

Shop the look: jacket: Blank NYC; scarf: old, similar; top: SheIn; jeans: Carmar; boots: Sam Edelman (under $100!)
