I’ve always loved going back to school. New school supplies, clean notebooks and new teachers always felt like a fresh start. This August I’m getting ready for my senior year, aka my LAST time going back to school. While I’m excited and nervous, my only complaint is the e-mails I’ve ALREADY been getting from professors, a month before classes start. I can’t wait to see my friends again, but I am not ready to start thinking about term papers or assignments! With the first day of classes getting closer and closer, I wanted to share a few ways to set yourself up for success for a new semester.
Write down important dates – I always go through each of my syllabi the first week of classes and write down every week’s homework assignments in my planner and all major due dates. I put due dates in my big monthly calendar and smaller assignments in each week. Most professors don’t remind you what homework you have each week and I know I forget to look at my syllabus during the semester, so if I don’t see anything written down in my planner, I assume I have nothing to do and risk forgetting an assignment. I also try to write down any major events coming up that could benefit or interest me – whether they’re job or class-related, career fairs, or other school events!
Meet with your professors – the earlier you do this the better! It can be intimidating but it’s always better to build a relationship with a professor BEFORE you find yourself needing help. It’s also great to have a close relationship with one or two professors in your field in case you ever need a recommendation letter. The first meeting can be super casual – find out when your professor regularly has office hours, come up with a question or two for them (professional, class, or generic) and stop by for 10-15 minutes to introduce yourself!
Go to your student career center – this one is a little biased because I work at mine but it really is an incredible free service you should be utilizing! Go early and meet with a peer advisor or career advisor to go through your resume, talk about what you learned at your summer internship, and what steps you should be taking to keep moving forward. If you wait until the week an application is due or the week of the job and internship fair at your school it’ll be much harder to get an appointment and cause you so much unnecessary stress!
P.S. How cute is this outfit for the first day of school?? I always get so cold in the air conditioning and this sweater is perfect! The cotton is super lightweight and the open neck and half sleeves make it an ideal transitional piece. I may or may not be wearing this for my first day of classes…
